He seemed to be pretty much in the middle to me. In with the new tech, but mindful of the old. He must have spent years mixing on vinyl so it couldn't have been easy for him to switch. A lot of releases are digital only now from what I understand.

I don't think folks really care how the music is presented these days, as along as its good. Who distinguishes vinyl sound from digital on the dance floor?

My buddy who dj's a lot said he prefers carrying a flash drive vs heavy records. Makes sense.

his view of vinyl is very confusing. on one hand he says it is the best way, and then he submits and says he must go with technology, followed by points of building up digital over vinyl.
vinyl will always set djs apart. it's harder to mix records cleanly, there are more factors. a dj that can make new music with existing records, right in front of my face, will always hold my interest more.
He says it's 'cool' what Hawtin is doing - checking twitter and djing 4 tracks together at once, without effort - hello, this is Stupid and Boring!
I will take the raw and live edge of your seat, anything can happen, shit can hit the fan, dj mixing vinyl anyday over a digital hack pressing buttons and calling himself God. The soul is lost in all that, keep it real and raw.

and, yes, vinyl sounds better and covers the spectrum in a more ear-friendly manner. I have a large system in my basement and the comparison is night and day. maybe 1 out of 10 digital tracks will sound (close to) as good as the vinyl. All other times the highs are shriek and to sharp, and the low end is cold and weak.

take it back! :)
